A Sequential 3D Thinning Algorithm and Its Medical Applications

چکیده
Skeleton is a frequently applied shape feature to represent the general form of an object. Thinning is an iterative object reduction technique for producing a reasonable approximation to the skeleton in a topology preserving way. This paper describes a sequential 3D thinning algorithm for extracting medial lines of objects in (26, 6) pictures. Our algorithm has been successfully applied in medical image analysis. Three of the emerged applications (analysing airways, blood vessels, and colons)

A Parallel Thinning Algorithm for Grayscale Images
Grayscale skeletonization offers an interesting alternative to traditional skeletonization following a binarization. It is well known that parallel algorithms for skeletonization outperform sequential ones in terms of quality of results, yet no general and well defined framework has been proposed until now for parallel grayscale thinning. We introduce in this paper a parallel thinning algorithm...
متن کاملA note on 'A fully parallel 3D thinning algorithm and its applications'
A 3D thinning algorithm erodes a 3D binary image layer by layer to extract the skeletons. This paper presents a correction to Ma and Sonka’s thinning algorithm, ‘A fully parallel 3D thinning algorithm and its applications’, which fails to preserve connectivity of 3D objects. We start with Ma and Sonka’s algorithm and examine its verification of connectivity preservation. Our analysis leads to a...
متن کاملIsthmus–based Order–independent Sequential Thinning
Thinning as a layer-by-layer reduction is a frequently used technique for skeletonization. Sequential thinning algorithms usually suffer from the drawback of being orderdependent, i.e., their results depend on the visiting order of object points. Earlier order-independent sequential methods are based on the conventional thinning schemes that preserve endpoints to provide relevant geometric info...
متن کاملA new stochastic 3D seismic inversion using direct sequential simulation and co-simulation in a genetic algorithm framework
Stochastic seismic inversion is a family of inversion algorithms in which the inverse solution was carried out using geostatistical simulation. In this work, a new 3D stochastic seismic inversion was developed in the MATLAB programming software. The proposed inversion algorithm is an iterative procedure that uses the principle of cross-over genetic algorithms as the global optimization techniqu...
متن کاملA 3D Sequential Thinning Scheme Based on Critical Kernels
We propose a new generic sequential thinning scheme based on the critical kernels framework. From this scheme, we derive sequential algorithms for obtaining ultimate skeletons and curve skeletons. We prove some properties of these algorithms, and we provide the results of a quantitative evaluation that compares our algorithm for curve skeletons with both sequential and parallel ones.
